THE DEPARTMENT OF LANDES is the one five that the region Aquitaine counts. It is bordering departments of the Gironde, Lot-et-Garonne, the Gers and the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. It 's also bathed on the West by the Atlantic Ocean along a sandy coast of 106 km lined with high dunes. This vast department benefits from the littoral longer second in mainland France.

The forest of Landes is the biggest forest of France; it covers approximately 67 % of the department, in its north part, but extends so widely over the Gironde and Lot-et-Garonne. It is mainly planted by maritime pines.

The forest of Landes does 'nt however occupy all the surface.In the South of the department, beyond Adour, is a series of more hilly and green countries, a farmland shared between the breedings of beefs and ducks and the culture of the corn, as well as the vineyard in the East.

Landes of Gascony :  
It is this part, the vastest of the department, that gave him his name. It corresponded to a landscape of moor, before the plantation of pines. 

The Coast of Silver :
The tourism from the Landes concentrates mainly on the coastal zones, the Coast of Silver, where the fame of the conditions of surfing made the world tour (several tests a year). The main sea resorts of the department are (from north to south) : Biscarosse, Mimizan, Contis, Lit et Mixe, Vielle saint Girons, Moliets et Maa, Messanges, Vieux Boucaux-les bains, Seignosse, Hossegor, Capbreton Labenne, Ondres, Tarnos.

Thermal spas :
The balneology attracts numerous persons having hydrotherapy. The department counts the thermal spas of : Dax (first health resort of France) - Eugénie-les-Bains (first village thinness of France) - Préchacq-les-Bains-Saint-Paul-lès-Dax - Saubusse-les-Bains

Pilgrimage :
Three of four roads of the pilgrimage of Santiago de Compostela cross the department of Landes: the way Lemovicensis, from Vézelay - The way Podiensis, from Puy-en-Velay - the way Turonensis, from Tours. These roads are registered on the UNESCO world heritage since 1998. If adds to it the way of Soulac on the coast Aquitain.The recent beaconing of these medieval roads tends to revitalize a new shape of tourism.

Sites UNESCO :
Besides Saint Jacques's historic roads, four sites stages adults from the Landes were registered on the list of the world heritage of the humanity :
- the church Sainte-Quitterie of Area 
- the bell tower hall of Mimizan
- the abbey of Saint-Sever -The abbey Saint Jean de Sorde and his ancient monastery Benedictine of the XVIIth century, with his barn boatwoman. 

Religious Heritage :
The churches of Landes and the abbeys of Landes, which certain number are classified by Historic monuments, form a remarkable religious heritage.
